Traditional Industrial Art of Edo
The face of the glorious
culture of the common man
The Edo Era was one of peace and wealth. Thanks to the Shogunate's
policy of increased consumption, daimyos (feudal lords) promoted
industry in their fiefdoms. In the end, it was the tradesmen that
prospered, by gaining financial power.
Samurai, merchants, and people who lived in nagaya (old-style apartments)
custom-ordered their furniture and accessories from specific artisans.
At the time, the value of genuine articles was high and people appreciated
having their own original items. The artisans answered the demand
with exquisitely designed pieces.
The practice continues today. There are still several artisans living
in Japan who have inherited the practice of custom-made designs.
They bring their skill and their craft to you, over the ages, as
priceless and as timeless as ever before.
These industrial arts of the Edo Era will show you the true joy
of life and the real wealth of craftsmanship that are lacking in
today's world of commercialized mass-production.
Won't you take a look and see what Edocraft has to offer you?
